Family Voice

A story read in a familiar voice — with that person's own permission, and never a child's.

What Family Voice is for

A grandparent who lives far away reading tonight's story. A parent on a late shift reading it anyway. That is the whole idea.

It is a way to keep a familiar voice in the room, not a way to make ONUPA sound like someone it is not.

The rules that come with it

  • Only the voice owner can agreeAn account holder's permission does not cover another adult's voice. The person whose voice it is consents themselves, or it does not happen.
  • Consent has to be provedAgreement alone is not enough: the voice owner completes a verification step appropriate to how the voice will be used.
  • It can be withdrawnThe voice owner can revoke at any time, and revocation propagates — the voice stops being usable and what was built from it is deleted.
  • Language by languageA voice qualified for one language is not automatically offered in another. Each is decided on its own.

Reading aloud without a family voice

You can also record yourself reading a story, or simply read it from the screen. Neither needs anyone's voice to be replicated.
